THE PROJECT
Developed in partnership with Instituto Alana, the project aims to support the development of an institutional position and advocacy agenda on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, with a particular focus on protecting children and adolescents in digital environments. The initiative seeks to help Instituto Alana develop a strategic perspective on the impact of AI-based technologies in educational settings, considering their risks, opportunities, and implications for rights, equity, and child development.
To this end, the project involves synthesizing national and international research and analyzing public policies, regulatory frameworks, and existing initiatives related to AI governance, data protection, and children’s online safety. Based on this research, analytical resources were produced to enable Instituto Alana to develop recommendations, guiding principles, and priorities for its engagement in the public debate on AI in education.
The initiative also included the development of strategic communication and advocacy materials, such as technical notes, policy briefs, and guidance documents, to support engagement with policymakers, civil society organizations, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders. These materials aim to strengthen the debate by providing evidence, concepts, and parameters to guide decisions and policies designed to ensure the comprehensive protection of children and adolescents in contexts mediated by digital technologies.
In this way, the project strengthens Instituto Alana’s capacity to engage in an informed and strategic manner in the field of AI governance in education, advancing an agenda that brings together technological innovation, the protection of rights, and the well-being of children and adolescents.
The initiative centers on generating and synthesizing evidence, including case studies, assessments of AI tools used in education, and international frameworks for AI governance and regulation. The project also seeks to contribute to the development of criteria for public procurement, impact assessment, and the safe use of AI, with particular attention to data protection, equity, and algorithmic transparency.
